o if you have just found out that you need to, or that you MAY need to take The TOEFL iBT Exam — but you don't really know anything about it — then this post is a great place to start.
So What IS The TOEFL Exam?
n my 15+ years of experience teaching The TOEFL Exam — most people who who contact me about it already know a little bit about what the exam is. Usually because they are told about The TOEFL Exam by a teacher or a fellow student.
owever — those people are not "TOEFL Professionals". And even if they do know a bit about the exam itself — their information may not be accurate. Especially because The TOEFL Exam keeps changing. So let's start from the very beginning.
What You DON'T Need To Know
(but which most text-books spend the first 10-50 pages discussing)
irst of all — a lot of the most-shared information about The TOEFL Exam is outdated. But even much of the current information — even if true — does not actually help you to prepare for The TOEFL Exam. This information usually includes things like:
- The History Of The TOEFL Exam — This Is Not Important to anyone other than the makers of the exam. It helps you in no way.
- Who Created The Exam — Again — This Has nothing to do with your success on the exam.
- How Many Countries Support The Exam — This is completely irrelevant because you will only be taking the exam in one country. All the rest are irrelevant.
- How Many Universities Accept The Exam — This also does not matter, because you only need to know if the University that YOU are going to (or applying to) requires it.
- "What The Exam Can Do For Your Future" — The TOEFL Exam doesn't actually "DO" anything at all for "Your Future". It is your success at Univeristy, or the job that requires The TOEFL Exam that is what changes your future. The exam is merely a step in that process.

What Does "TOEFL iBT" Mean?
his information is not necessary for your success on the exam. However, the name itself explains what the exam actually is. Both parts of the name are Acronyms.

don't know exactly why they chose to not capitalize the letter "i" in the name. That is not standard practice with Acronyms — but I can imagine that it had something to do with the huge popularity and success of all the "i" products from that one computer company around the same time that they created this particular version of the exam.
owever — the use of the term "internet" in the name is mis-leading and has caused a lot of confusion. You will NOT actually be "connected" to the internet (as we know) during the exam. You will be connected to the TOEFL Exam THROUGH the internet. But you will ONLY be connected to the exam.
ou will not be able to access any other sites, tools, or apps while you are taking The TOEFL Exam. And you can't just go to some website and take the exam "On The Internet" from wherever you want.
Now On To The Important Stuff...
The Format Of The TOEFL Exam
nce it begins — the entire exam takes just under 1.5 hours (83-89 minutes). But this is just the time for the actual exam. This does not include the checkin before the exam; getting settled at your computer; and doing the equipment check before the exam.
o the entire Exam Day process takes between 2-3 hours. And there is no break during the exam. Once it begins — it can not be stopped. So using the bathroom during the exam is not an option.
he exam is broken up into four sections, each with its own allotted time. You can learn more of the details of each of these sections, including all of the Questions & Tasks in each section in The TOEFL Excellence Training System. Those sections are in the following order:
The Reading Section — First Section — ~30 Minutes (50 Items)
The Listening Section — Second Section — ~29 Minutes (47 Items)
The Writing Section — Third Section — ~23 Minutes (12 Items)
The Speaking Section — Fourth Section ~8 Minutes (11 Items)
But The Best Part Is...
(at least for many people)
here is NO Dedicated "Grammar" Section on the exam. Meaning: You Will Be Directly Tested On English Grammar. However — your knowledge is INDIRECTLY tested thoughout the exam.
nd your comprehension of the basic point of grammatical structure (such as comprehension of Pronouns, and Demonstrative Adjectives) will be tested. But you do not need to answer any questions about Grammar itself.
Scoring Of The TOEFL
ach Question, Task, Section, and the Overall Exam has its own scoring. The scoring for each individual Question & Task is unique to that Question or Task, and can be learned about in The TOEFL Excellence Training System.
ut each Section of the exam (Reading, Listening, Writing, & Speaking) receives a score of 0-6 — based on the total points for each individual Question & Task.
hen the entire exam — as a whole — ALSO receives a total score from 0-6, based on the total scores from each section individually.
This system of scoring is actually new to The TOEFL Exam, as of January 2026. It is one of the most drastic changes to The TOEFL Exam in the last 22 years. And it appears that it was done so that there was easier correlation between the final TOEFL Scores, and the European Framework of English Proficiency.

The final score for the entire exam is an average of the scores for each section, rounded to the nearest "half-band". So if your average score for each section was 5.25, your score would be rounded up to 5.5. If you average was 5.75, your score would be rounded up to 6. So, based on this system, you can get a "perfect" score of 6, even having not gotten "perfect" scores throughout the exam.
And that's what makes The TOEFL Exam Awesome!
It Is Possible To Make A Few Mistakes And STILL Receive A "Perfect" Score On Certain Tasks Or Even The Entire Exam 😎
How Is This Possible?
ell, the way it is possible for the entire exam is described above. Because the final score is based on the average of each section — and then that score is rounded up.
ut in the Speaking & Writing sections, your score is not based on a "correct answer". It is based on how well you are able to communicate.
o if you stumble in your speaking, or perhaps mis-spell one word — if your overall message is clear, and you fulfilled the task appropriately — you can still receive a "perfect" score for that task.
This is because, no one speaks and writes perfectly all of the time. Making minor mistakes is a natural part of "Authentic English" 😉
