What has traditionally been called the “Long” pronunciation of the letter “A”, (when it is by itself) is a sound which is referred to as a “Diphthong“.  A “Diphthong” is actually made up of more than one vowel sound put together, but functions as a single unit.  The Long Letter A sounds like this:

However there is a problem with this.  This is because, the second “letter” of this symbol is the one used to represent The Short Letter I
